Kurt Edelhagen formed his first big band in 1946. He was a natural bandleader and headed ensembles from 1949 until 1973, working in radio stations in Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Baden-Baden and Cologne. The last-named band, resident at the studios of the West German Radio, Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) featured such international players as trumpeters Milo Pavlovic, Shake Keene, Dusko Goykovich and Jimmy Deuchar, alto saxophonists Derek Humble and Karl Drewo, tenor saxophonist Wilton Gaynair, trombonist Jiggs Whigham and drummer Ronnie Stephenson.
