Jazz Ahead in Mexico

Heinz von Hermann's Jazz ahead Quintett war wieder einmal durch Vermittlung der Österreichischen Botschaft als Österreichs Exportartikel in Sachen Jazz unterwegs. Dieses Mal zusammen mit Ines Reiger als Sängerin und Christian Salfellner als Schlagzeuger zusammen mit dem Kem der Truppe, Heinz von Hermann, Saxophon und Flöte, Uli Langthaler, Bass und Erwin Schmidt am Klavier. Das Konzert im fast ausverkauften Saal des CONACULTA, im National Center of Arts, in der Stadt der Städte, war der Beginn einer lOtägigen Tour durch Mexico. Südamerikanisches Publikum ist anders, sagt man, und es stimmt. Nicht nur Standing Ovations nach 3 Zugaben, sondern auch wirklich begeisterte Leute, jung, älter, alt-und alle enthusiastisch. Darum sollte man eigentlich nicht glauben, daß es in einer Stadt wie MC nur eine Schule für Jazzmusiker gibt. Dort, in der „Escuela Superior de Musica" absolvierte das Quintett einen Charity-Workshop erster Güte. Heinz von Hermann, bekannt als Big Bandleader, probte im Anschluß sogar noch mit der Big Band der Schule. Weitere Konzerte gab es in der Nachbarprovinz Morelos auf der Hacienda de Cortes, in Cuamavaca, einer ehemaligen Maismühle, die zum Hotel und Kulturcentrum der Stadt umgebaut wurde und auch in Puebia, im neu errichteten Museum Amparo, wunderschön, aufregend , dort spielte eine mexicanische Vorband, das „Jazzificando" Quartett. Als Kulisse sieht man von Puebia aus den noch aktiven Vulkan Popocatepetl. Den Abschluß machte das wirklich gelungenen Konzert im Klostersaal des Centro Historico in Morelia. Vier Stunden westlich von Mexico City liegt diese schönste Stadt Mexicos.

Im Nachhinein gilt ein besonderer Dank, dem Österreichischen Auswärtigen Amt, der Österreichischen Botschaft in Mexico-City, Herrn Martin Hojni, Veronica Ituarte von der Escuela Superior de Musica, RA. Woess & Partner, Fa Kores und Herrn Koreska, Fa. VA-Tech und Herrn Bösche und Herrn Jochen Hiss. Ohne sie wäre diese schöne Tournee nicht möglich gewesen.

Heinz von Hermann's Mexican tour in April with his Jazz Ahead Quintet was by way of being a jazz export article arranged by the Austrian Embassy. Added to the usual lineup of Heinz on saxes and flute, Uli Langthaler on bass and Erwin Schmidt on piano were drummer Christian Salfellner and vocalist Ines Reiger.

The ten day tour began in the Conaculta Hall of the National Centre of Arts in Mexico City with a concert that was filled to capacity. People swear that the South Americans are different when it comes to jazz, and this was proved to be true right from the start. Young, old, and very old reacted energetically and enthusiastically to the music, with standing ovations and no less than three encores at the end of the concert. Such a reception makes it really hard to believe that Mexico City only boasts of only one school for budding jazz musicians. There, in the Escuela Superior de Musica, the quintet held a charity workshop where Heinz, well-known as a big-band leader, coached the school's big band after the concert.

Other tour concerts followed in the neighbouring province of Morelos, in the Hacienda de Cortes, another in a former corn mill, rebuilt as a hotel and Culture Centre in Cuamavca. In the newly built Museum Amparo in Puebia a local band called the Jazzificando Quartet led off the proceedings. A fiery background to this concert was the still active volcano Popocatapetl. The final concert of this very successful tour was in the monastery of the Centro Historico in Morelia, the most beautiful city on Mexico, a four hour drive from Mexico City.
